  • What is this service anyway?
  • What are the benefits of a sod installation service?
Before we start the blog, remember that Year Round Services is available to answer any questions and provide any lawn and landscaping services that you may need to be done to your property!  Ok, so let’s get started.

What is a sod installation service?

There are multiple steps in the process of sod installation. Some things that occur are:
  • Removing Old Grass
  • Removing weeds in your soil
  • Amending the soil (If necessary)
  • Grading the Soil
  • Sometimes setting up irrigation sprinklers for the sod
Some of these services are solely based on the overall condition of your lawn. So, you may need more or less depending on the shape that your lawn is in.

What does sod installation include?

Basic services in sod installation include sod installs as well as distributing new fertilizer on the newly done and prepared soil. The workers have to unroll, place, seam, and pack the sod but a lot of time goes into equipment and material as well as area prep, protection setup, and cleanup.

Can sod be installed over existing grass?

It is not a good idea to install sod over pre-existing or existing grass. Most people think it is a shortcut, but it is actually the exact opposite. Installing sod on top of grass could ultimately kill your sod, as well as lead to you doing twice the amount of work. Removing the old lawn is an essential part of creating a healthy root system for the newly installed sod.

Do I need to do soil preparation before I sod?

Yes, it is a good idea and needs to be done before a sod installation.  There are plenty of different things that you could do during soil preparation, such as:
  • Clear the area of stones, debris, or rocks bigger than 3 inches in diameter.
  • Rough grade the area to eliminate problems with drainage.
  • Till the soil to a depth of 2 inches or more before topsoil is added.
  • Apply starter fertilizer and mix it into the top inches of topsoil.
  • Test the soil!
  • Make sure the surface is settled to be perfect for sod installation.
Rototilling is also something that can be done prior to sod installation as well as other methods. This will provide loose soil for the roots to grow into, and it also works with old sod and weeds, putting them into the soil instead of digging weeds and old dirt out by hand.

Is it better to seed your lawn or sod your lawn?

One of the main reasons sod is better than grass seed is that it provides you with a lawn for instant happiness and enjoyment. It can take several seasons for a healthy, luscious, strong lawn from grass seeds, while sod takes root in a few short weeks.

When can I start to do lawn care things after installing new sod?

You may have to wait a bit between a sod installation and your other lawn maintenance services in most scenarios. Your newly installed sod should take between 10-14 days to root. You should wait 10-14 days before you mow the new lawn after laying down sod.  You also may wait the same amount of time when it comes to walking or running/playing on the new sod because if you allow foot traffic on your new lawn too early, you can actually prevent the new young roots from developing the way they should.

When should I water my new sod?

Just like every other lawn, you should water your new sod in the morning and late afternoon as you want to avoid watering during the evening. Watering during the evening can keep your lawn moist overnight, and the dampness will bring disease, fungus, and unwanted pests onto your property.

What are the benefits of a sod installation service?

There are a tremendous number of benefits that come out of a sod installation service. Here is a list of some of those benefits:
  • An instantly new lawn!
  • After installation, less irrigation is required.
  • Preventing soil erosion.
  • Makes for a denser lawn.
